Restoring a Retired Aircraft Cockpit Seat
Not every leather restoration arrives from a car, handbag, or piece of furniture. This retired Global aircraft cockpit seat came to MBBG carrying plenty of evidence from its previous life—and an interesting combination of leather, wool, carbon fiber, seat belts, and specialized interior finishes. The goal was not to make an old seat look artificially new, but to thoroughly clean, repair, and preserve it while respecting what it originally was.
The seat arrived with general soiling and areas of mold growth that required careful attention throughout the restoration. One of the most significant areas of leather damage was located along the upper shoulder, where the material required repair down to the backing structure. The leather was secured back into position, the damaged surface rebuilt, and the area refinished to restore a much cleaner and more complete appearance.


With several different materials incorporated into the seat, each surface required its own approach. The leather was thoroughly cleaned and cared for, while the wool seating surfaces were treated with an appropriate textile cleaner to remove accumulated soiling and improve visible staining. Mold contamination was carefully addressed throughout the affected areas rather than simply cleaning what could be seen on the surface.

The seat belts presented another interesting opportunity. Instead of relying solely on conventional wet cleaning, they were dry ice blasted using a Dry Ice Energy NEO machine. This allowed accumulated contamination to be addressed while working with a very different cleaning process than the leather and textile portions of the seat. The carbon-fiber components and surrounding surfaces were also carefully cleaned as part of bringing the entire assembly back together visually.

One of the smaller details turned out to be particularly satisfying. The soft-touch seat adjustment rollers had deteriorated with age and developed the familiar sticky surface sometimes found on older soft-touch coatings. That degraded material was removed and the components were refinished, leaving the controls clean, functional, and—perhaps most importantly—pleasant to touch again.


Projects like this are a reminder that restoration is rarely about one product or one technique. Leather, wool, carbon fiber, webbing, adhesives, coatings, and years of accumulated wear all had to be considered individually. Knowing when to clean, repair, refinish, or simply preserve an original surface is an important part of responsible restoration.








This retired cockpit seat has already completed its working life in the air, but its story isn't finished. With the leather repaired, mold and soiling addressed, wool refreshed, belts cleaned, and aging finishes restored, it can now be appreciated for what it is: an extraordinary piece of aviation equipment with plenty of character still intact.
